Having worked as an actress in many independent films, she longed to tell stories from behind the lens as well. Fueled by a lifelong love for cinema and a fascination with documenting the world around her from a young age, she set out to make her directorial debut with the Award-winning short documentary Say My Name which she also produced under the banner of her production company Blue Iris Films. The film won Best Experimental Short Film at Sweden's Boden International Film Festival, was Officially Selected and had its U.S. Premiere at the prestigious Newport Beach Film Festival, and was nominated for Best Documentary Film at ARPA International Film Festival alongside Oscar-winning films like The Last Repair Shop.

Mariam is a strong supporter of the notion that representation matters and this is a major cornerstone of her work as an artist. Hoping to make underrepresented communities like her own feel seen and heard, her work focuses on telling the stories of marginalized communities.
